The Worst Times For Your Back

No one likes back pain, but did you know there are specific times when you are more prone to back injury? Performing even small activities at the wrong time can be harmful and lead to back injury. There are two particularly high-risk periods for back injury.  Here they are:

1. First thing in the morning

When you first awaken, your muscles are not warmed-up, have less blood supply and the joints of your spine can be stiff and non-supple. Also, the nerve receptors of the spine which are giving your body all the movement (kinesthetic) feed back have not been stimulated due to the inactivity of the spine while you were sleeping. Just like a car needs to be driven for a mile or two before the tires, the engine and the brakes are warmed up, your spine also needs to go through movement and a proper warm-up period before it can be optimized for the stress and strain of your activity.

2. After you've been sitting for a while

Inactivity causes extra fluid to build in the joints, leading to a swelling-like symptom that can potentially cause damage to the discs and lead to back injury. Sitting up straight with good posture can help reverse the fluid build-up, and so can sleeping with a chiropractic cervical pillow like the PILLO1 cervical pillow that helps support and align your entire spine.

Be cautious after sitting or lying down for an extended period of time.  Do some kind of activity that warms up the muscles and stimulates the joint receptors before exerting yourself. Walking up strairs, stridding out in a good walk for a few minutes or doing some simple movements can make a real difference.
